LION Goh was one of Singapore's top performers at the
UBC-Singha Junior Golf Championships in Thailand last week.
The Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student finished second in the
boys' B Division after posting a score of 18-over-par 306 over four days of
competition at the
Palm Hills Golf Resort and Country Club in Hua Hin.
Lion, who finished three strokes behind a Thai golfer, was one of four
junior golfers sent to Thailand by the Singapore Golf Association. The other
three were the Singapore Sports School trio of Joshua Shou, Gabriel Cheok
and Jason Loong.
Going into the final day of competition, Lion was in fourth position,
trailing the leader by four strokes. He had shot 81, 76 and 76 on the first
three days.
All fired up, Lion played aggressive golf but could only score a
one-over-par 73.
But he managed to pip Hong Kong's Steven Lam, who was in second position
going into the final shootout.
Playing in the leaders' flight, Steven collapsed by playing
three-over-par on the last two holes, thus losing the second position to
Lion on countback.
Overall, the boys had difficulty reading the fast greens as the speed was
set at a high 11.5 on the stimp-meter. The tough pin positions made it a
harrowing experience.
Joshua and Jason made the halfway cut in the A Division, but Gabriel fell
short after shooting 85 and 80 in the first two rounds.
Joshua finished on 31-over-par 319, while Jason signed off with 44-over
332.
A total of 200 junior golfers from Asia took part in the annual
championship.
Singapore had a big contingent in
Hua Hin. Apart from the SGA boys, a lot
of junior golfers went up on their own expense.
One of those parents who sponsored their children's trip was Jerry Tan,
whose sons Levine and Enzo competed in the C and E division respectively.
Among those who did well in
Thailand were Sports School's Gregory Foo,
who came second in C Division and Shearn Chua, who finished second in D
Division.
Five girls from the Singapore Ladies Golf Association - Natalie Koh,
Kristie Koh, Amanda Hui, Chen Ying Zhuang and Charisa Goh - also made the
trip.
