A Sea Turtle Conservation Fair was held at Bangtao Beach in Phuket.

baby sea turtles aged between 3 to 6 months old were released back to sea by
Thais and foreigners who participated in the annual Sea Turtle Conservation
fair in front of the
Dusit Laguna Phuket hotel on Bangtao beach. Co-organized by the Hotel,
Phuket Biological Centre and the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet, the event
aimed at promoting awareness on sea turtle conservation as well as getting
public donations towards the conservation project. At the fair the public
enjoyed shows, exhibitions on sea turtles and fun games. They also made
donations of 500 baht to release baby turtles into the sea. The event was
officially presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Nirund Ka-la-ya-na-mit,
Laguna Phuket group Managing Director James Batt and attended by famous Thai
TV stars. More than 200,000 baht in donations were also presented to the
Marine Biological Centre for sea turtle conservation work.
Life Cycle of sea turtle
- After mating, female swim to beach at night, here she uses both beach
flippers dig a hole into the sand.
- Laying egg which soft as leather, each does more than twice per year.
- Liquid from her eyes is for humidity control and sand protection
- When the turtle finishes laying the eggs, she then conceals the nest,
covers the eggs pit with sand. She the goes back to the sea. The turtle
leaves her tracks on the beach.
- Turtle eggs hatching period is about 60 days.
- At night, after hatching, the young turtles climb up to sand surface
and move to the shore and clumbsely swim to the deep sea where they
survive by floating in the sea currents.
