The
Tiger Temple in Thailand, a large forest monastery where an extraordinary
bond between man and the world's biggest cats has formed.
The link started in 1999 when a sick baby tiger, orphaned after poachers
shot its mother, was brought to the monks guided by Abbot Pra Acharn Phusit.
Their respect for all living creatures saw them take the cub in, joining a
host of other creatures which needed their care. Within a few years several
other tiger cubs similarly orphaned by poachers had arrived.
Under the monks' care the well-fed tigers have mellowed. They are kept caged
in the mornings and at night when they are most active, then in the
afternoons are set free. They walk with the monks about 500m to a blind
canyon – like a dusty quarry with only one entrance – where they laze in the
afternoon sun.
This has turned into a tourist attraction, one the monks encourage as they
seek to fund their plans for a 'tiger island' where the cats do not need to
be caged at all.
After signing a waiver, visitors can walk to the canyon where they wait
behind a single strand of rope – on the other side 10 large tigers doze. For
maybe five seconds you feel secure behind the strand of rope, then realise
it is just a queueing tool and would offer no protection if one of the cats
decided to walk off.
The Tiger Temple raises many questions, not the least being the wisdom of
walking among tigers in the first place. It is definitely not a place to
take children, nor is it a place for hoons. But when it comes to close
encounters in the wild, this is one of the closest. |

Bridge
on the River Kwai TourFascinating, nostalgic and memorable sums
up this day tour to the Kanchanaburi province. The famous bridge and the
beginning of the 'Death Railway' which lies some 1 mile outside town are a
poignant reminder of the thousands of POW’s and forced laborers who lost
their lives in the Second World War. This trip has it all and is the
ultimate tour in Bangkok!
