The
2006 Volvo Masters of Asia takes place at the
Thai
Country Club, Bangkok, Thailand from 14th – 17th December 2006.
The Volvo Masters of Asia tees off at Thai Country Club for the second
successive season in December featuring the cream of the Asian Tour’s players.
One of the world’s most in-form golfers India’s Jeev Milkha Singh will
compete in the tournament, which is being played from December 14 to 17, and
offers a total purse of US$650,000.
Singh has claimed three titles this year, including the Volvo China Open and
the Volvo Masters in Spain and is therefore on for a unique hatrick of titles.
He also won the Dunlop Phoenix Open in Japan in November and has already secured
the Asian Tour UBS Order of Merit title.
His compatriot and defending champion Shiv Kapur will return to Thai Country
Club along Thailand’s top golfers Thongchai Jaidee, Thaworn Wiratchant and Prom
Meesawat.
The Volvo Masters of Asia is a tournament that Volvo inaugurated in order to
provide the region with a Tour Championship for the first time.
It was first played in 2002 and features an elite field of the top-60 players
from the Asian Tour Order of Merit (taken after the penultimate event of the
year).
Volvo staged the very successful Volvo Masters of Malaysia from 1994 to 2001
before deciding to upgrade the event after realizing the region would benefit
greatly from having its own Tour Championship.
Former winners of the event are Korean Na from Korea (2002), Thongchai
(2003), and Indian Jyoti Randhawa (2004). |
