Bangkok’s new
Suvarnabhumi Airport was built as a strategic gateway for the Star Alliance
member carriers in the Asia region. The airport that opened on September 28
serves ANA, Asiana, Austrian, Lufthansa, SAS, SWISS, Singapore, THAI and United.
“More than two years ago, we discussed the opportunities arising from the new airport with our colleagues at THAI,” said Stephan Nagel, Director, Network. “In our BKK Hub Study we modelled a potential strategic gateway and it was not a big surprise to see that a strong Star Alliance hub at BKK was extremely beneficial for THAI and the entire alliance.” The Star Alliance benefits directly from the partnership that THAI Airways has forged with the airport. The new facilities complement the ‘Move under one Roof’ concept that allows all member carriers to operate out of a single location. This allows the airport to strengthen its hold as a competitor and hub in the region. “Our member airlines saw the potential that the new airport could bring to the alliance,” said Nagel. “In particular, our friends at Thai Airways have embraced through key planning stages.” |
