Phraya Nakhon Cave in
Sam Roi Yot National Park is a 450-metre trek from Laem Sala beach. The
limestone cave houses a pavilion where
King Rama V
stayed overnight during his visit to the South. Although the pavilion was
moved outside recently for renovation, the cave is still worth a visit.
The cave is named after the former ruler of Nakhon Si Thammarat who
travelled to
Bangkok more than two centuries ago to appear before
King Rama I.
It is a sweat-drenching ascent over rock steps and followed by a steep
descent to the cave. Visitors pass prominent spots along the way such as an
ancient well, a viewpoint, stalagtites and stalagmites that look like a
waterfall, inscriptions of
King Rama V
and VII
and poisonous shrubs.
To reach the cave, drive to Sam Roi Yot National Park, 63 kilometres from
Hua Hin and follow
the sign to Bang Poo beach. From there hire a boat, which costs around 200
baht for six to eight persons to Laem Sala beach. You can also hike there
from Bang Poo beach. Be sure you carry own bottled water.
