Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport will be approximately 40 km closer to
Pattaya
than Don Muang is today, which results in more tourists travelling east
along the motorway to Pattaya.
This in turn will encourage new investment in
hotels. At least three
international hotel chains will open properties either this year or in early
2006.
The room capacity in Pattaya will increase from 22,000 to 27,000 rooms by
the end of the year.
Tourism Authority of Thailand Central Office Region 3 director, Chattan
Kunjara Na Ayudha said the Suvarnabhumi Airport will certainly draw more
tourists to Pattaya.
He forecasts tourist arrivals should increase by 14% in 2006 compared
with the average 7% to 10% improvement in recent years.
Mr Chattan noted that Pattaya is just 120 km from Suvarnabhumi Airport
but 160 km from Don Muang Airport. Also as the new airport is on the eastern
side of the city just off the main motorway to Pattaya, travellers would not
have to journey through the city itself before driving east to Pattaya. This
could save at least one hour during the peak traffic hours.
President of Pattaya's Business and Tourism Association, Thanet
Supornsahasrungsi said low interest rates would attract investors to build
more three-stars hotels or even budget class properties which are very
popular with travellers booking Pattaya.
