 The Foundation have launched a new series of ten postcards, featuring
drawings of turtles by school-children. In July this year, the Foundation
organized a drawing contest with the theme “Life of Marine Turtles”, aimed
at creating an environmental awareness among children in the Mai Khao beach
area, including over forty students from Hong Yok and Mai Khao school who
participated in the competition. The foundation sponsored the paper & paints
for the children. Ten outstanding pictures were selected to be printed out
as postcards.
JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa hosted the award presentation
and lunch for the children whose art was selected for the postcards, which
are now available for sale at the hotel. All proceeds from the postcard
sales go to the foundation. JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa donated two
million Baht to launch the Foundation in March 2002 to raise funds and
awareness for the plight of the critically endangered giant leatherback
turtles that nest in the area.
The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation
was launched during the Grand Opening Celebrations of
JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa
in March 2002, with a cheque for two million Baht (approx US$45,000) that
was presented by the joint venture partners of the resort (Marriott
International Inc. and Royal Garden Resorts Ltd), to start the fund.
The resort will conduct fundraising activities as part of its "Spirit to
Serve our Community" program, a worldwide Marriott International initiative.
How does it Work?
A Board of Directors will receive written applications for funds each
year. Sub-Committees are responsible for fund raising and disbursement,
subject to the approval to the Board of Directors. Representatives of
Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) - the global conservation organization, will
sit on these two sub-committees in an advisory capacity.
Only legally recognized and registered organizations will be eligible to
receive funds from the Foundation, and must be able to clearly demonstrate
the benefits that they will bring to the turtles, through the use of the
funds. Results will be monitored.
Making a Difference
Through the work of the Foundation and raising funds to support the
efforts of local people in this very important cause, we can make a
difference. Any assistance you can offer by way of donations to help us help
the leatherbacks will be gratefully received. Donations can be made at the
