| Temporary ban on fishing in the Gulf of
Thailand
BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) – The Thai government has imposed a three-month
fishing ban in the Gulf of Thailand, from 15 February-15 May, to help
protect breeding mackerels, the Director-General of the Department of
Fisheries, Sidthi Boonyaratpalin, told TNA on Wednesday.
Fishing will be banned in a 26,400 square kilometre area, covering the
southern coastal provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Surat Thani.
The ban covers all fishing methods, including the use of dragnets,
trammel nets and push nets attached to fishing boats longer than 16 metres,
Mr. Sidthi said..
Home-made fishing tackle and small-sized nets will be permitted during
the restriction period, he added.
A ceremony to officially mark the start of the fishing restrictions will
be held on 15 February at the provincial master pier in Chumphon's Muang
district attended by fishing boat owners and government officials, Mr.
Sidthi said.
